A group of Lee High School students stands outdoors at Hayes Nature Preserve with members of the City of Huntsville’s Green Team. The students are gathered in a semicircle around a table where tools and supplies are laid out, listening to instructions before beginning invasive species removal. Two orange weed pullers stand upright in the foreground, and a Green Team vehicle is parked to the right. Bare trees and cloudy skies appear in the background.

Huntsville, Ala.--
Lee High School’s Advanced Placement Environmental Science students and Green Ambassadors spent the day making a real impact at Hayes Nature Preserve, thanks to an invitation from the City of Huntsville’s Green Team. Under the guidance of Mr. McDonald, who teaches AP Environmental Science and leads the Green Ambassadors, students took part in hands-on conservation work that directly supports the health of one of Huntsville’s most treasured natural spaces.

Students began the morning by removing Chinese privet, an invasive plant species that threatens native vegetation and wildlife habitat. Working together, they cleared a section of the preserve, learning firsthand how restoration efforts protect biodiversity and improve ecosystem resilience.

After the cleanup, students explored the preserve’s trails and observed wildlife that thrives in the area. Sightings included a barred owl, mallards, woodpeckers, a blue heron, and other species that depend on Hayes for food, shelter, and nesting habitat. The experience offered students an up-close look at the ecological relationships they study in class.

To celebrate their hard work, the Green Team treated the group to pizza for lunch. Back at school, students wrapped up the day with a reflection on invasive species removal, habitat restoration, and the importance of community involvement in environmental stewardship.

Lee High School extends special thanks to Joel Donelan and the City of Huntsville’s Green Team for hosting and leading this experience. Our students showed up ready to learn, work, and serve—and their efforts made a meaningful difference.
