High school is about more than attending classes and earning credits. Students also need opportunities to discover their interests, build relationships, practice leadership, and contribute to their school and community.
Lee High School offers involvement opportunities through athletics, the arts, clubs, publications, service projects, and leadership activities. Students do not need to join everything. The goal is to find one or two activities that match their interests and that they can attend consistently.
Explore Athletics
Athletic teams allow students to build discipline, teamwork, communication, and physical fitness. Current opportunities at Lee include football, volleyball, girls flag football, bowling, tennis, basketball, wrestling, softball, soccer, swimming, cross-country, baseball, cheerleading, and other programs offered throughout the year.
Tryout dates, eligibility requirements, and practice schedules vary by sport. Students interested in participating should speak directly with the coach or faculty sponsor before a deadline passes. Students should also consider whether they can balance practices, competitions, attendance, and academic responsibilities.
Athletic involvement is not limited to competing. Some programs offer student-support roles, including team management and service organizations such as the Lee Diamond Belles.
Participate in the Arts
As a performing and creative arts magnet school, Lee provides many ways for students to develop and share their talents. Students may participate in band, vocal music, theatre, dance, visual arts, creative writing, and performances such as Once on This Island.
These programs require more than talent. Students learn to prepare, accept feedback, meet deadlines, collaborate, and perform for an audience. Productions and showcases also need students who can help behind the scenes with sets, sound, lighting, costumes, publicity, and event support.
Students should watch for audition announcements and speak with arts teachers about both performance and technical opportunities.
Become a Published Writer or Artist
Lee High School’s award-winning literary magazine, HarmoniousLEE, gives students the opportunity to share original work with a larger audience. The magazine accepts student submissions and provides a way for writers and artists to see their work published.
Students who enjoy poetry, short stories, essays, photography, or visual art should watch for submission guidelines in the weekly newsletter. The current submission deadline is November 1. Previous editions of the magazine are also available for purchase through the program sponsor.
Serve the School and Community
Community service can help students develop responsibility while meeting real needs. The FamiLEE Focus recently highlighted volunteer opportunities with the Huntsville Learning Center. Other service opportunities may become available through school clubs, arts events, athletic programs, community partnerships, and campus activities.
Students should keep an accurate record of their service hours, including the date, organization, activity, and supervising adult. These records may be useful for resumes, applications, scholarships, and recognition programs.
Find Leadership and Belonging
Clubs and student organizations give students a smaller community within the larger school. These groups may focus on academics, culture, service, careers, school spirit, or shared interests. Participation can help students meet peers, connect with supportive adults, and practice speaking, planning, problem-solving, and leadership.
Students who are unsure where to begin should ask a counselor, teacher, or trusted staff member to recommend an activity based on their interests.
How to Get Started
Students and families can find current opportunities by:
Reading the weekly FamiLEE Focus
Checking ParentSquare announcements
Attending scheduled club meetings
Reviewing school announcements and calendars
Speaking with coaches, teachers, and faculty sponsors
Asking a counselor about available programs
Students should act quickly when they see an opportunity because tryouts, auditions, applications, and submissions often have firm deadlines.
The best activity is not necessarily the most impressive one. It is the activity that helps the student grow, contribute, and remain involved. Finding a place at Lee begins with showing up, asking questions, and being willing to try something new.
