two students looking at chromatography in the science lab

Our 8th graders have been studying pure substances and mixtures in science class. This week, they explored chromatography, a process that uses a solvent to separate the different pigments in black ink. Students were excited to see that what looks like one color is actually made of many different colors. This hands-on experiment helped them understand an important property of mixtures—that they can be separated into their individual parts.
