Monte Sano was thrilled to welcome Alabama’s own, James Spann. Born at Huntsville Hospital and a former Huntsville resident, we proudly claim him as one of our own (and Alabama’s most loved celebrity). During his visit, students learned all about weather, from reading maps and the importance of locating their homes, to how weather balloons and satellites (22,500 miles above Earth!) help predict storms days in advance. He explained radar, tornado warning signs like hook echoes and debris balls, and the differences between cloud types such as wall, shelf, and scud clouds. Students also discovered what makes a storm severe, how to stay safe during tornadoes (including using weather radios and sheltering in the smallest interior room), and why lightning safety matters. We learned how hurricanes are tracked by the Air Force and all about the excitement of snow days! It was an engaging and unforgettable learning experience for our Mountaineers!
