A pile of books with the text "Ridgecrest Reads to Succeed Reading Challenge: September Winners"

Over the summer Mrs. Gatzke, our librarian, and Ms. Brandon, our Assistant Principal, put their heads together to come up with a way to get our Ridgecrest Rickets to read more. They decided to ask teachers to give their students more time to read freely in class and to log that time, creating a reading challenge called Ridgecrest Reads to Succeed. Mrs. Gatzke created a bulletin board to keep track of how much each class was reading.

When a student reads for ten minutes in class, they fill out a paper that looks like the cover of a book. Each teacher in grades Kindergarten to Fifth Grade has a special color to help with tracking the reading. Throughout the month, Mrs. Gatzke staples the little book covers to the bulletin board in the library so students can see which class in their grade is ahead. It was a slow process and some classes did not participate this month, but we had a great start anyway!

Bulletin Board tracking reading progress part way through September; at this point Kindergarten and Fifth Grade were empty and First, Second, Third and Fourth Grades had entries for each 10 minutes of reading

Students in the winning classes recieved a coupon for a free meal at Panda Express, a special bookmark, Makerspace time in the library, and their teacher wins Duty Free Lunch!!

And the winners are…. (drumroll)
  • Kindergarten - Mrs. Cannon’s class with 160 minutes of reading

  • Second Grade - Mrs. Fields’ class with 710 minutes of reading

  • Third Grade - Mrs. Barksdale’s class with 860 minutes of reading

  • Fourth Grade - Ms. Benjamin’s homeroom with 270 minutes of reading

  • Fifth Grade - Mrs. Stanfield’s homeroom with 140 minutes of reading

And HOLY COW this class had SO MUCH READING TIME!!!

  • First Grade - Ms. Durr’s class with 1,810 minutes of reading!!

Remember it's a new month so we can have new winners!! Pick up a book and read to succeed!! We are excited to see how much reading our Rockets do in October!
