Larry Saulsberry, Principal Agun, and staff pose together during a Read Across America visit while displaying quilts and materials from Gee’s Bend.

Rolling Hills Elementary was honored to welcome Mr. Larry Saulsberry, Director of Teaching and Learning for K–12 Literacy for Huntsville City Schools, as part of our Read Across America celebration.

Mr. Saulsberry spent time reading with our 6th grade students and sharing a powerful and personal presentation about Gee's Bend and his family’s connection to its rich cultural heritage. Through storytelling and discussion, students learned about the history, artistry, and resilience of the Gee’s Bend community and the generations of quilters whose work has become nationally recognized.

His visit brought literacy to life by connecting reading with history, culture, and personal legacy. Students were deeply engaged as they listened, asked questions, and reflected on how stories help preserve the experiences of families and communities.

We are grateful to Mr. Saulsberry for taking the time to invest in our scholars and for inspiring them through the power of literacy, heritage, and storytelling.
