Students from Sonnie Hereford Elementary School’s 4th, 5th, and 6th grades took a deep dive into discovery during their recent field trip to the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, where they explored the wonders of aquatic life and environmental science up close.

From the moment students stepped inside the aquarium, excitement filled the air. They marveled at the majestic river giants, colorful coral reefs, and playful penguins, while learning about ecosystems that span from mountain streams to the open ocean. Many students were fascinated by the touch tanks, where they were able to safely interact with stingrays and other marine life.

Throughout the day, students engaged in conversations about habitats, food chains, and conservation, connecting what they’ve learned in science class to real-world examples of biodiversity and environmental care.

“This trip was a perfect blend of fun and learning,” said Assistant Principal Tiffanie Pogue. “Our students not only got to see some incredible wildlife, but they also gained a deeper appreciation for science, nature, and the importance of protecting our planet.”

The trip was made possible through the teamwork of teachers, chaperones, and administrators who helped make the experience both educational and memorable.

“We are so grateful for our amazing teachers and parent chaperones who made this day such a success,” said Principal Irving McGuire. “Our students represented Sonnie Hereford with pride, curiosity, and respect throughout the entire trip.”

As the buses rolled back to Huntsville, the smiles on students’ faces said it all, the trip was a hit. The adventure to the Chattanooga Aquarium provided lasting memories and strengthened Sonnie Hereford’s mission to inspire curiosity, learning, and community through every experience.
