Hello Whitesburg Families!
What a great week of teaching and learning we have had at the Burg!
We are excited to offer our students two STEM-based extracurricular opportunities: Greenpower Team and Robotics Team. Both teams provide students with opportunities to develop problem-solving, teamwork, creativity, and STEM skills.
Robotics is open to students in 3rd–5th grades, while Greenpower is open to students in 4th–5th grades. Because spots on both teams are limited, students may participate on only one team, Greenpower or Robotics, not both.
Applications for both teams have been made available at the same time. The selection for Robotics will be announced tomorrow and the selection for Green Power will be very soon.
There are specific guidelines for eligibility and selection. Each applicant must have a teacher recommendation, and every application will be evaluated using a specific selection rubric. Students with the highest application scores will be selected for the available spots. The Robotics Team will follow the same application and selection process as Greenpower.
We want to remind families that not every student who applies will be selected. We understand that this can sometimes be disappointing for students and families. However, learning how to apply for an opportunity, compete fairly, accept a decision, and handle disappointment appropriately is an important part of growing up.
Sometimes we get the opportunity we hoped for, and sometimes we don't. That is part of life, and learning how to respond when things don't go our way is just as important as learning how to celebrate when they do.
Please help us reinforce this message with your child. Being selected, or not being selected, for a team does not define a child's abilities, potential, or value. There will be many opportunities throughout their school years to try new things, develop their talents, and find activities where they can shine.
We are proud to provide these opportunities for our students, and we appreciate our families helping us teach students to work hard, compete fairly, handle disappointment with grace, and keep trying.
Thank you for your support! I am blessed to serve with you at the BURG!
