Weatherly Heights Elementary is proud to shine a spotlight on American Filament, a South Huntsville–based manufacturer of high-quality, U.S.-made 3D-printing materials. Owned and led by Mrs. Brooks, American Filament has been an active part of the Huntsville community since 2021 and is a valued supporter of our PTA and STEM initiatives.

American Filament produces reliable, consistent filament used by hobbyists, classrooms, engineering teams, small businesses, and even local aerospace and defense companies. The company designs, colors, and manufactures all filament in-house—right here in our own community. Their materials support everything from student STEM lessons to professional prototypes, making 3D printing more accessible for creators of all ages.

The Brooks family has been part of the WHES community since 2021. Last year, when the PTA purchased a 3D printer for the school, Mrs. Brooks volunteered to help get it up and running. She trained Mrs. Wilson on how to use it—and now Mrs. Wilson is a pro! American Filament also ensures our school always has plenty of filament, giving students steady opportunities to explore hands-on design and problem-solving throughout the year.

When asked why they chose to support our PTA, Mrs. Brooks shared that Weatherly has “the best PTA on the planet” and that her family wanted to give back to a school community that supports kids, staff, parents, and neighbors alike. American Filament believes deeply in sparking curiosity and confidence in students. They hope their sponsorship gives children opportunities to build, experiment, and turn their ideas into real objects through 3D printing—experiences that can ignite lifelong creativity.

Families may be surprised to learn that all American Filament products are manufactured right here in South Huntsville. Some of the same spools students use for school projects also help create real prototypes for engineers in the local aerospace and defense industry. Visitors who stop by their facility may even get to see the production line in action!

American Filament supports several local initiatives, including the FTC Browncoats robotics team and programs at the YMCA. Their commitment to community, education, and hands-on learning makes them an exceptional partner for WHES.

They also shared a fun special for families: their bargain bin is always well-stocked, and customers who bring in empty American Filament spools receive $1 off for each one.

One of Mrs. Brooks’ favorite Weatherly memories comes from last year’s STEAM Night, where she helped at the 3D printing table. Watching students and even adults light up as they learned about 3D printing reminded her why hands-on STEM experiences matter so much. “Seeing their faces made me understand why teachers teach,” she said.

We are grateful to American Filament—not just as a local business, but as a WHES family—for their generosity, enthusiasm, and ongoing support of our school community.
