Weatherly Heights Elementary School recently celebrated the 100th Day of School in true Roadrunner fashion, with an “Out of This World!” theme that brought learning, laughter, and community together in a memorable way.
To mark day 100, students and staff leaned into the fun by dressing like they were 100 years old. Our hallways were filled with creative “centenarian” style, complete with glasses, canes, gray hair, and plenty of giggles. The celebration added a joyful spark to the school day while reminding everyone how much growth happens in 100 days of learning.
We were honored to welcome a remarkable visitor: Mrs. Annell Wright, born September 2, 1918, who is 107 years old. Her visit gave students a powerful connection to history through a real person whose life spans more than a century of change, innovation, and stories.
This celebration was also part of our commitment to community connections. Weatherly Heights collaborated with Alabama Extension’s Successful Aging Initiative (Alabama A&M University) to create a shared experience centered on time, wisdom, and intergenerational learning.
As part of the event, homerooms created handmade cards for Mrs. Wright featuring facts and details from 1918 and student signatures. Classes also had the opportunity to meet her during scheduled visit times, share their work, and take photos to remember the moment.
Weatherly Heights is proud of our Roadrunners for celebrating 100 days of progress with creativity, kindness, and curiosity, and we are grateful to Mrs. Wright and our community partners for helping make the day so meaningful.
