Being a virtual school sometimes makes it difficult to get students to complete those extra assignments like character education.
The Artemis faculty has been creative in getting students to participate in these things by running monthly contests. To get students engaged in the Word of the Month program, the staff offered a contest to award the best artwork to depict the word: Patience. Junior Autumn Maxwell won the contest with her entry "Cat."
"The directions were to submit artwork or a picture that depicted the word patience. Since my cat is always waiting on me and the family, I decided to draw my cat waiting patiently at the window," Maxwell said.
Maxwell received a card and a gift card to Slim Chickens for her winning entry.
Counselor Erin Coggins says the school will host more contests like this to get students a chance to become more than just virtual students, but students who are their school.
"I jook forward to having more of these contests to get our students involved in our character education program. I think this is a good way for our students to lend their student voices and talents to make us their school. Autumn's artwork was so good and the perfect way to depict patience for sure," counselor Erin Coggins said.
