"We can use the pipe cleaners to brace the tower."
Questions like this filled the classroom as students in grades 3-6 came together to enjoy teacher Sabrina Priest's STEM lesson on hurricanes.
The students were tasked to build their own structures using a variety of products in order to conduct a structure test to see if the structure would withstand wind and water. Before building the structures, students worked together to make a plan as well as imagine how their plan would or would not work.
"I loved this lesson," third grader Hadassah Greene said. "I love to do crafts and this lesson let us use our crafting skills."
In the end, students discovered that structures needed stability to withstand winds as they were tasked to make adjustments to their towers after the structure test.
"Students really enjoyed this lesson. It was fun to see their faces when they had to rethink how they needed to build their towers," Priest said. "It was just a fun lesson."
