Having a passion for art herself, as well as seeing the interest Artemis students have in creating, elementary teacher, Sabrina Priest started offering monthly art lessons.
A different art period is addressed in the monthly lessons, and students in grades K-12 are invited to attend the lessons in person. Some of the lessons have focused on pop art, Wassily Kandinsky's art and Jasper John's art. Priest ensures that key design elements like line, shape, form, value, color, texture, space, contrast, balance, emphasis, movement, rhythm, repetition, unity and proportion are taught.
"I love to create and watch students express their creativity through art," Priest said. "Students get to explore creating with different art mediums such as paint, oil pastels, watercolors and pencils."
Students that cannot attend in-person lessons can take advantage of Priest's virtual lessons. These are also offered monthly. To Priest, art education for students in grades K- 12 matters.
"Art education teaches so much. It strengthens academic skills, helps to build creative thinking and critical thinking, improves fine motor skills and visual literacy skills," Priest said. "It can also be a great support for emotional growth and student identity."
