As part of the school's America 250th celebration, students were invited to create their birthday messages to the country.
The activity is part of the My America, a national youth-based art and civics engagement project commemorating America's 250th. The tiles students created will be mailed to the organization to be put on display, along with artwork by student across the nation, in December.
"I visited the My America booth while attending a conference last winter, and I knew immediately that this would be a great project for our students," counselor Erin Coggins said.
Students were asked to draw things they love about America, as well as write a birthday message. Each grade level was provided a different prompt for more detailed artwork.
"Our students loved that they could express their creativity on the tiles. Some drew American landmarks, while others drew the flag," Coggins said. "One of our fourth-graders drew the bald eagle. I can't wait for them to see the photo of all the tiles sewn together and on display."
