School Lunch Hero Day

Between preparing delicious food, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, Huntsville City Schools nutrition professionals have a lot on their plate. To celebrate their hard work and commitment, Huntsville City Schools will celebrate School Lunch Hero Day on May 3. This day, celebrated annually since 2013, was designated by The School Nutrition Association and Jarrett Krosoczka, author of the “Lunch Lady” graphic novel series. School Lunch Hero Day provides an opportunity for parents, students, school staff and communities to thank those who provide healthy meals to nearly 30 million of America’s students each school day.

All across the school district, school nutrition professionals will be honored and recognized by students, school staff, parents, and the community. All Child Nutrition Program staff will celebrate by wearing their School Lunch Hero Day t-shirts.

“School nutrition employees must balance many roles and follow numerous federal, state and local regulations to ensure safe and healthy meals are available in schools. School Lunch Hero Day provides the opportunity for the community to thank these hardworking heroes for their dedication to fueling our students for success,” said Henry E. Ward, Child Nutrition Program Director

Federal nutrition standards ensure that school cafeterias always offer low-fat or fat-free milk, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. School meals also meet limits on calories, sodium and unhealthy fats. The importance and nutritional value of school meals are well documented. For many children, school lunch is the most important and nutrient-rich meal of their day. At Huntsville City Schools, we serve over 23,400 students and execute an average of 24,200 meals each school day. We offer healthy options for breakfast, lunch, and after-school meals. Our program consists of three segments of USDA programs, and they include the National School Lunch program, the School Breakfast Program, the Child and Adult Care Food programs and the Summer Food Service Program.

Learn more on the School Lunch Hero Day website. To learn more about the school nutrition program for Huntsville City Schools visit the CNP page of the HCS website. https://www.huntsvillecityschools.org/page/child-nutrition-program.

The School Nutrition Association (SNA) is a national, non-profit professional organization representing 50,000 school nutrition professionals across the country. Founded in 1946, SNA and its members are dedicated to making healthy school meals and nutrition education available to all students. Learn more about today’s school meals on the School Nutrition Association website.

Calling all parents of students with disabilities! Join us for a comprehensive parent training workshop designed to shed light on the importance and intricacies of Extended School Year (ESY) services. This workshop aims to empower parents with the knowledge to navigate and advocate for the additional educational support that can make a significant impact on their child's learning journey.

Key Highlights:

  1. Understanding Extended School Year (ESY): Get a thorough understanding of what Extended School Year services entail and how they differ from the regular school year, especially in catering to the needs of students with disabilities.

  2. Eligibility Criteria: Learn about the criteria used to determine whether a student qualifies for ESY services and how parents can actively participate in the evaluation process.

  3. Individualized Considerations: Explore the individualized factors that are taken into account when determining the need for ESY services, considering the unique needs of each student with disabilities.

  4. Collaboration with IEP Team: Understand the collaborative role parents play in discussions with the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team to determine if ESY services are necessary for your child.

  5. Goals and Objectives: Gain insights into how ESY services align with the goals and objectives outlined in a student's IEP, ensuring continuity and progress in their educational development.

  6. Addressing Regression and Recoupment: Learn about the concepts of regression and recoupment and how they are considered when deciding on the necessity of ESY services to prevent significant skill loss.

  7. Parent-Professional Collaboration: Explore strategies for fostering positive collaboration between parents and education professionals to ensure a holistic approach to a student's ESY services.

By participating in this workshop, parents will gain the knowledge and tools needed to actively engage in discussions about ESY services, fostering an environment where students with disabilities can thrive academically and continue to make progress even during extended breaks. Remote Learning Day

Following last week's school closure due to severe weather, HCS is making a minor schedule adjustment to the academic calendar. Currently, the last day of school is set for Thursday, May 23, which will be a half-day and early dismissal (elementary schools dismiss at 11:30 AM; middle/junior highs, all grades for AAA/ASFL dismiss at 12 PM; high schools dismiss at 12:40 PM).

In order to account for the school closure on May 9, HCS will make Friday, May 24 a remote learning day. Students will not report to school campuses. Teachers and employees will continue with an employee workday as previously planned.

Students will receive academic packets on or before Thursday, May 23 for the remote learning day on Friday, May 24. Students will not be required to turn in their packet, and packets will not be graded. Teachers will be available via email on Friday, May 24 for any students who may have questions or need support.

Students are encouraged to work on their packets throughout the summer in order to practice academic skills and prepare for next school year.
