Three HCS High Schools Named Among Top Schools in State

Each year, U.S. News & World Report compiles a list of the best high schools in the country and in each state. Three Huntsville City Schools were featured on the list of the top high schools for the state of Alabama: New Century Technology High School, Huntsville High School, and Grissom High School.

New Century Technology High School was featured as the fourth best school in the state of Alabama with an overall score of 97.47, noting the school’s high AP participation rate. Huntsville High School ranked at 17th in the state and was given the overall score of 90.32. Grissom High School placed at 29th in the state of Alabama and was given an overall score of 84.82.  

U.S. News’ rankings consider the following factors: college readiness (30%), reading and math proficiency (20%), state assessment performance (20%), underserved student performance (10%), college curriculum breadth (10%), and graduation rates (10%). 

U.S. News describes the highest-ranked schools as “those whose students demonstrated outstanding outcomes above expectations in math, reading, and science state assessments, earned qualifying scores in an array of college-level exams, and graduated in high proportions.” 

These rankings are based on data from the 2020-21 school year.
