Huntsville City Schools (HCS) has become the largest school system in Alabama to earn District STEM Certification from Cognia, a global nonprofit that accredits primary and secondary schools around the world. This distinction affirms HCS’s leadership in integrating STEM education across all grade levels and positions the district as a state and national model for innovative, future-ready learning.

The STEM certification, awarded by the Cognia Global Commission, recognizes districts that demonstrate exemplary commitment to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics instruction by embedding it into curriculum, instruction, and culture district-wide.

Additionally, HCS also earned full District Accreditation from Cognia, with a strong Index of Education Quality (IEQ) score of 330, significantly surpassing the network average of 296.

“This distinction speaks volumes about the dedication of our educators, students, and the entire HCS community,” said Dr. Clarence Sutton, Superintendent of Huntsville City Schools. “Our focus on STEM is not just about preparing students for future careers. It’s about equipping them with the critical thinking and creativity needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.”

The Cognia review highlighted HCS’s success in ensuring equitable access to STEM education through project-based learning, real-world applications, and robust community partnerships. Additional strengths cited in the Cognia review include:

  • A learner-centered professional development system that is tailored using observations and performance data.

  • A comprehensive K–12 computer science program, beginning in kindergarten and culminating in advanced coursework.

  • Strong implementation of digital tools and platforms such as iReady, Schoology, and ExploreLearning, fostering student agency and lifelong skills.

  • A Technology Initiative Review Committee that ensures tech integration directly supports learning outcomes for all students and educators.
